The Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS) and the Trustees of Saint Gabriel’s College in North Belfast can confirm that the development proposal to close the school has been approved by the Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane.
CCMS and trustees have been engaged in a process of consultation and discussion with the Board of Governors with regards to the future viability of the college. During this period all avenues and options were fully explored and discussed.
Regrettably as a result of a falling enrolment and the subsequent impact that this has had on curricular delivery, CCMS and the trustees reluctantly recommended the closure of the college.
A CCMS spokesperson said
Unfortunately St Gabriel’s College has been a casualty of the demographic downturn, which is affecting so many schools across all educational sectors.
Both CCMS and the trustees fully acknowledge that the proposal for closure will have a significant impact upon staff, pupils, parents and the local community especially at a time when St.Gabriel’s is celebrating 50 years of outstanding service to North Belfast.
The school authorities will engage in discussions with parents in relation to the ongoing educational provision available for their children.
Furthermore CCMS will make every effort to ensure that discussions will be held with regard to the future of the staff.
