Construction completes for St Joseph’s Primary School

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Building work completed today for phase one of a new development at St Joseph’s Primary School, Carryduff, for a replacement building and facilities.

The Down and Connor Diocesan Public Private Partnership (PPP) Project has delivered, on schedule, an impressive, modern school which can accommodate 420 pupils.

The 15 classroom building also boasts four resource areas allowing children the opportunity to work independently outside the class environment. The state of the art design has incorporated interactive white boards, enhanced IT systems and the most up to date technology available.

Speaking about the completed project, Gerry Lundy, Head of School Planning and Development for CCMS said,

“The Council for Catholic Maintained schools is very proud of what has been achieved with this new development. We have worked closely with the school, the PPP consortium and the contractors involved with the joint goal of delivering the optimum education experience for the staff and pupils at St Joseph’s. The result is an innovative building incorporating the latest educational resources and technology to provide an impressive school environment for the children in the area”

According to school Principal, Dominic Donnelly,

“Today brings us one step closer to realizing our dream for a new school. This is an exciting chapter in the history of the school for the staff, pupils and local school community. We believe that this is truly a ground-breaking project for St Joseph’s and every aspect of the development has been pupil focused. Our children will now be taught in modern, fit for purpose classrooms where they can avail of the latest educational equipment and facilities.

This is an extremely welcome investment for Carryduff and we hope that when complete, the new school buildings can be a resource available for the entire community.”

Phase two of the project will see the construction of a 52 place nursery unit and further subsidiary works on site, including extensive landscaping and the development of impressive playground facilities.

The PPP consortium comprises O’Hare McGovern and Interserve who have been appointed as the main contractor and the facilities management respectively.
