The Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS) and trustees of Catholic education have confirmed that have begun a process of presenting a draft proposal for the amalgamation of three Catholic Post Primary schools.
The Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS) and trustees of Catholic education have confirmed that have begun a process of presenting a draft proposal for the amalgamation of St Comgall's College, St Aloysius and St McNissi's College to the Board of Governors and staff of each of the three schools.
The draft proposal to amalgamate the three schools into a single co-educational post primary school follows a period of preliminary consultation in which a feasibility study and economic appraisal were conducted of all of the options for the provision of post primary education in the East Antrim area.
CCMS and the trustees acknowledge that the proposal for amalgamation will have a significant impact upon staff, pupils, parents and the local community. However they believe that the creation of a new co-educational school is the only viable and sustainable option for the area and which reflects the Department of Educations current policies.
They believe that it will fully utilise the combined expertise of the teaching staffs and lead to the enhanced educational provision and improved extra curricular activities for all pupils. Furthermore it will facilitate the more efficient management of resources and finances.
The formal consultation period has begun following CCMS submission of the draft proposal at the recent North Eastern Education and Library board meeting in January 2008.
It is anticipated that the formal consultation period will last three to four months and will enable all interested parties to put forward their views to on the draft proposal to the Department of Education.
