GMB Schools list Inaccurate

GMB Schools list Inaccurate

Thursday, February 1, 2007

The Council for Catholic Maintained Schools has responded to the publication this week to the list of schools in the North of Ireland, which the GMB Union claimed would be earmarked for closure as a result of the Bain Recommendations.

The Council for Catholic Maintained Schools has responded to the publication this week to the list of schools in the North of Ireland, which the GMB Union claimed would be earmarked for closure as a result of the Bain Recommendations.

The Council regards the GMB Union list as grossly misleading, wholly inaccurate and too simplistic. Furthermore the Council has questioned the GMB Union’s decision to produce such a speculative list and to put it into the public domain thereby causing unnecessary stress and concern to Trustees, Governors, schools and local communities.

It is worth noting that both Professor Bain and the Secretary of State have recently endorsed the strategic area approach, which CCMS has adopted in relation to planning provision for its schools, and identifying future needs. Furthermore the Council welcomes the Bain recommendations as an opportunity to work with other educational sectors for the common good.

The Council wishes to remind all schools that the future of any individual Catholic Schools will be determined by the Trustees and only then after a period of full consultation with schools and local communities.

The Council for Catholic Maintained Schools will issue to schools its strategy for managing its response to the Department of Educations, Sustainable Schools Policy.

As a parent i am deeply concerned by this list and the possible closure of my wee school. I hope that the government realise they are playing with childrens lives.
